Bioinformatics Minor

Description

Bioinformatics is a new and rapidly evolving discipline that has emerged from the fields of molecular biology and computer science. Bioinformatics is being used in many different areas such as molecular medicine, preventative medicine, gene therapy, drug development, waste cleanup, climate change, alternative energy sources, biotechnology, antibiotic resistance, forensic analysis of microbes, bio-weapon prevention, evolutionary studies, crop improvement, insect resistance, nutritional quality, and more.

    Bioinformatics Minor Requirements - 18 credits

    The minor in Bioinformatics consists of 18 credits (six classes) equally balanced between computer science and biology. All of the courses are taken from the current offerings of computer science and biology. The required courses are listed below.

    • CSSE 3540* Database Systems (3 credits)
    • CSSE 4610* Introduction to Data Mining (3 credits)
    • CSSE 4620 Introduction to Bioinformatics (3 credits)
    • BIO 1200 General Biology I (3 credits)
    • BIO 2700** Genetics (3 credits)
    • BIO 4740 Cellular and Molecular Biology (3 credits)

    * Students must also take CSSE 1710 Intro to Programming 1 (three credits) and CSSE 1711 Intro To Programming Lab I (one credit), which are prerequisites for CSSE 3540 and CSSE 4610.   ** Students may have an additional prerequisite of BIO 1220.  Discuss with your advisor.
