Detroit Mercy Theatre Company to present "The Grown Ups"
Detroit Mercy Theatre Company (DMTC) presents The Grown Ups by Simon Henriques and Skylar Fox April 4-13 at the Marlene Boll Theatre inside Detroit’s Boll Family YMCA.
The play follows a group of camp counselors in the world of a remote sleepaway camp as they navigate the highs and lows of camp life. As they swap stories by the fire, form unlikely bonds, and challenge each other’s perspectives, an unsettling presence looms, forcing the counselors to examine their own values and the unpredictable forces beyond the campfire’s glow.
Originally produced in July 2021 around a backyard campfire in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the production captured audiences with its intimate storytelling. Now, in a timely staging, Detroit Mercy Theatre Company brings The Grown Ups to the Motor City, offering audiences a fresh look at a world where the promise of tomorrow feels more fragile than ever.
“This is one of those plays that I hope audiences discuss the entire drive home,” said director and chair of the Department of Performing Arts Andrew Papa. “What if something like this were to happen? How would we respond? What can we do to ensure the story of the show doesn’t become a reality? It’s a piece that’s just as intellectual as it is emotional. It’s also a great call to action.”
The Grown Ups runs six performances April 4-13 at The Marlene Boll Theatre inside the Boll Family YMCA at 1401 Broadway in Detroit. Purchase tickets online at www.DetroitMercyArts.com or by calling the ticket office at 313-993-3270.
