The Marketing & Communications Department (MarCom) oversees websites for the University, especially the public websites in the udmercy.edu domain.  With ITS, we administer the Cascade CMS system for website management.

Attend a session

If you are involved in the University's websites, you're invited to attend an in-person computer lab session with MarCom Web experts. These will not be structured training sessions. (Please use MarCom's video training series for that purpose.) Each session, MarCom Web staff will be on-hand to answer questions, take feedback, and discuss best practices related to the websites and the Cascade CMS system used to manage them.

Where: Commerce & Finance Building Room 10 (lower level)
When: 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. (drop-in is fine) on the following dates:

  • Thursday, Feb. 20
  • Thursday, March 12
  • Thursday, April 9

What does MarCom Web do?

MarCom staff manage website content, design, functionality, and technical development. MarCom oversees:

  • strategic website scope
  • website content quality
  • development of new websites, website sections, and webpages
  • consultation and training on best practices for the websites
  • training and access in the Cascade CMS system, which we use to maintain the websites
  • technical assistance for website content contributors
  • website design, usability, and accessibility
  • website code, functionality and other technical underpinnings

Website quality is critical for the University's goals, especially recruitment. No website can be all things to all people.  So, it’s critical to be clear on the priorities of a website.

    Website priorities

For University of Detroit Mercy, the overriding purpose of our public websites is to support the revenue-bearing activities of the institution, namely:

    • recruitment and retention of students
    • advancement, i.e. fundraising

Based on these core Web goals, the most important audiences for Detroit Mercy websites are:

    • prospective students (and their parents)
    • donors, especially alumni

By necessity, website activities that further these goals will always be given priority.

Maintaining your website

Websites require the involvement of content experts (a.k.a. subject matter experts) to keep their content accurate and up-to-date. Such "sitekeepers" can be given access to update website pages. This Web toolbox lists several of the content concerns that sitekeepers need to be aware of to keep our websites in good shape.  (See the button below.)

Sitekeepers should only worry about making sure that the website provides the correct information they know their customers need.  When it comes to design, organization, technical modifications, special functions, etc. please contact the MarCom Web team.
