Commencement this week: Share your big day
Detroit Mercy will hold its annual commencement ceremonies this Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12 in Calihan Hall on the McNichols Campus. Read the story online.
This year, when sharing photos and congratulatory comments on social media, make sure to include the hashtag #DetroitMercy2018 so we can display your posts on-screen in Calihan Hall and the Student Fitness Center before the event! Posts will be displayed from Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Volunteers are needed for the Commencement ceremony in Calihan Hall and the Baccalaureate Mass at Gesu Church on Saturday, May 12. Ushers, Eucharistic ministers and choir volunteers are asked to help from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. and can contact Drew Peters at petersas@udmercy.edu 313-993-1560.
Volunteers for Commencement will help distribute programs, offer general assistance to guests and help clean up after the ceremony; anytime between 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. is appreciated. Students will be eligible to receive service hours for the Emerging Leaders Program or other programs that have service requirements. Alumni Achievement Spirit Awards a great success
On Friday, April 27, Detroit Mercy honored seven alumni during the annual Alumni Achievement Spirit Awards. More than 280 people attended the awards gala and dinner celebration, which took place in the Ballroom of the Student Union on the McNichols campus. Students improve quality of life for vets through capstone project
Detroit Mercy engineering and nursing students joined forces with students from Lawrence Technological University and veterans over the past year to work on projects designed to ease challenges vets experience with everyday tasks due to physical disabilities.
This capstone project began more than nine years ago at Detroit Mercy with Darrell Kleinke, associate professor of Mechanical Engineering. He developed a capstone design course for the Mechanical Engineering program and focused the effort on ways students might make a difference in the lives of people in need. Dental student shares family story with American Dental Association to create change
During the first month of his dental education in September 2015, Michael Herman suffered the devastating loss of his brother who overdosed at the age of 27. Michael, now a third-year dental student at Detroit Mercy Dental, and his mother were recently highlighted in an interview with the American Dental Association, serving as activists to change prescribing habits and give a voice to people suffering from addiction. Clinical Associate Professor of Dental Hygiene Marguerite Buehner and Clinical Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry Curles Colbert, Jr. presented, "Oral and Dental Care in Long-term Care Facilities," at the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affair's Joint Provider Surveyor Training in Lansing, April 10. Buehner and Colbert were invited to attend statewide best practice organization meetings as a result of their efforts.
Associate Vice President of Marketing & Communications Gary Erwin discussed the recent student capstone project at the VA Hospital on the CW50 television program, "Street Beat." Watch the video online.

Associate Professor of Biology James Graves served as a judge in the areas of microbiology, cell biology and biochemistry at the 24th annual Michigan Science and Engineering Fair for future college students at Kettering University in Flint, April 7.
