Wednesday, April 11

  • The Institute for Leadership and Service, Dean of Students Office, International Services Office, University Ministry, Residence Life and Student Life will host the annual Leadership & Service Reception from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. Each department and organization will recognize and acknowledge the accomplishments of its students.
  • The University of Detroit Mercy Press, McNichols Campus Library, Department of English, African American Studies Program and Broadside Lotus Press cordially invite you to celebrate the publication of the new poetry collection, Medicine: New and Selected Poems, by Aneb Kgositsile. There will be a reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by a reading at 7 p.m. in the Bargman Room of the McNichols Campus Library. This event is free and open to the public.
  • Please join the Honors Program and the Black Student Union for the annual Honors Symposium from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 113 of the Ford Life Sciences Building. This year's event is centered on race, science and technology, featuring Associate Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry Prasad Venugopal as the keynote speaker.

Thursday, April 12

  • The Center for Career & Professional Development has organized a panel discussion introducing Detroit Mercy students, particularly young women, to professional careers in higher education. This discussion will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Presidents' Dining Room. Four panelists will share the diverse pathways they took toward careers in academe. Pre-registration is required; see the event page for more information.
  • Students, faculty, staff and administrators: The Charity Fashion Show is back! Enjoy a celebration of free expression through art, live music and dancing from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. Proceeds raised from donations during the fashion show will be given to a group of charities selected by the show's student models.

Friday, April 13

  • Kappa Delta Rho fraternity would like your help in supporting the family of deceased Detroit Police Officer Glenn Doss, Jr., by buying some homemade, wood-fired pizza between 3 and 6 p.m. in the Fountain area of the McNichols Campus. All proceeds of this fundraiser will be donated to the Doss family GoFundMe campaign. $3 for a quarter of a pizza, $10 for a whole pizza.
  • The College of Liberal Arts & Education Colloquium Series presents a platonic reflection on the presidency of Donald Trump, led by Professor of Philosophy David Koukal, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the front parlor of Lansing-Reilly Hall. Collegiality, conversations and light refreshments will be served.
  • The Ultimate Talent Show is the annual showcase for student talent, including music, poetry, dance and more. This year, the event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Fountain Lounge with a grand prize of $500! Registration and attendance of one practice event is required to participate in the show. Saturday, April 14

  • The Center for Social Entrepreneurship in the College of Business Administration will host a conference for nonprofit organizations to come and learn about techniques to achieve sustainability from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. See the event page to register.
  • University of Detroit Mercy will host a mathematics competition for interested high school students in a friendly match that tests problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge. The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the Engineering Building and will consist of the competition's exam, meet the professor mingle, prize announcements and lunch (provided). See the competition website for more information and to register.
  • Detroit Mercy Campus Kitchen is hosting a karaoke fundraiser at Bert's Market Place in Detroit's Eastern Market from noon to 4 p.m. A portion of food sales will be donated to Campus Kitchen. Karaoke participation is optional, but be sure to mention "Campus Kitchen" when you get your bill to ensure a donation!
  • The National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence partnered with Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority Inc., Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity Inc., Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity Inc., Alpha Phi Omega, Student Life and Residence Life to host an Alcohol Awareness Lock-In from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Student Fitness Center. All are welcome to attend.

Tuesday, April 17

  • The Celebration of Scholarly Achievement, Detroit Mercy's annual publication and poster fair, will be held from noon to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. All are welcome to attend. Come and learn about the many research projects and initiatives our students, faculty and staff take on throughout the year. See the Celebration of Scholarly Achievement website for more information.
  • Celebrate spring and take a break from studying for a fun-filled, carnival-themed afternoon at the annual Spring Blowout, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Kassab Mall. Students and alumni are encouraged to come and try this year's mechanical bull, obstacle course and inflatables. The Titan Dining Room will be closed for dinner, so be sure to stop by and grab some FREE walking tacos, chicken wings, ice cream and more. Alumni will be handing out finals week survival kits as well.

Wednesday, April 18

  • The Alliance To Halt Fermi-3, Beyond Nuclear, Greenpeace Canada, Michigan Sierra Club, and University of Detroit Mercy's CLASA will present, "Lessons NOT Learned From Chernobyl: Radiation Knows No Borders!," a community forum discussing the challenges of preparedness for safety in the case of nuclear reactor emergencies. The event is free, open to the public and will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 113 of the Ford Life Sciences Building. See the event page for more information and list of panelists.

Thursday, April 19

  • Attention all interested faculty, staff and graduate students: Come to the last Women's Leadership Round Table of the semester from 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 208 of the Student Union, featuring keynote speaker Sheryl Johnson-Roulhac, dean of the Center for Career & Professional Development.   • End your semester relaxed and stress-free at De-Stress Fest, open from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Student Fitness Center. Free food, bubble soccer, massages and other exciting activities. Be sure to check out the University Recreation event page as they countdown this year's available raffle prizes.

Saturday, April 21

  • Join Detroit Mercy alumni at the annual Day of Service from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Neighborhood, adjacent to the McNichols Campus. Volunteers will work with the San Juan Block Club on clearing lots, alleys and beautifying the neighborhood. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. All are welcome to participate. Go see The Complete History of America (Abridged)

The Detroit Mercy Theatre Company presents The Complete History of America (Abridged), performing April 6-22, at The Marlene Boll Theatre at the Boll Family YMCA, 1401 Broadway, in downtown Detroit. The Complete History of America (Abridged) is a 90-minute romp of slapstick humor and breathlessly paced vaudevillian takes of our country's history.

The Complete History of America (Abridged) will have performances at 7:30 p.m. on April 13, 14, 20 and 21, and 3 p.m. on April 15 and 22. Annual women's network conference this summer

Detroit Mercy is a member of the MI-ACE Women's Network, a group committed to identifying, developing the leadership of, advancing and supporting the retention of women in higher education throughout Michigan. The network's annual conference will be held this year in Lansing, June 4-5. Any woman interested in attending whose circumstances make attendance a personal hardship are encouraged to apply for the Lynette Findley MI-ACE Women's Network Conference Scholarship by Monday, April 16.

Military Friendly® School designation

University recognized as Military Friendly School

University of Detroit Mercy continues to provide a world-class education and top-notch services for military veterans and has once again earned the Military Friendly® School designation. The 2018-19 Military Friendly list, now in its 17th year, aims to provide the best opportunities for veterans and their spouses. Institutions earning the Military Friendly School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey completed by the school. For the first time, student survey data was also taken into consideration for the designation. Read the full story online.

Professors of History Roy E. Finkenbine and Greg Sumner gave a talk on "Teaching the Civil Rights Movement on the Road," at the spring meeting of the Metro Detroit-Area Historians' Collegium, April 6.

University of Detroit Mercy President Antoine M. Garibaldi will participate in the panel, "Higher Education Trends in 2018: A View from the Experts - Concurrent Sessions II," at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges National Conference on Trusteeship, April 22-24.

Detroit Mercy Dental Clinical Assistant Professor of Graduate Education Yung-Ting Hsu will receive financial support via the Osteology Foundation Education Grant to attend the Osteology Research Academy in Gothenburg, Sweden in May. The academy, titled, "Interface Biology and Ultrastructure," will include presentations, laboratory workshops, research discussions and opportunities to learn from experts in biomaterials and oral tissue regeneration. The Osteology Foundation provides continuing education for young clinicians and researchers to enhance the quality of research and provides a unique scientific network. Grants are offered annually to support postgraduate education in the field of oral tissue regeneration.

Associate Professor of Political Science Stephen Manning organized and served as a panelist on a panel titled, "Historical Legacies, Critical Junctures, and Institutional Choices in Post-Soviet Transitions," at the 76th Annual Midwest Political Science Association Conference, held in Chicago, April 5-8.
