Tuesday, April 3
- If you are healthy and able, consider donating blood to the Red Cross, which will be available between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the Student Union's Fountain Lounge.
- Associate Professor of English Mary-Catherine Harrison will present the 2018 Last Lecture, titled, "Expanding Our Moral Circle, " from 4:15 to 6 p.m. in the Genevieve Fisk Loranger Architecture Center of the Warren Loranger Architecture Building. The Last Lecture was reintroduced in November 2014 to honor a Mercy College of Detroit tradition. See the event page for more information.
- The Detroit Mercy Arab Cultural Society is hosting a fundraising dinner to aid students in Iraq. Come join in the dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
Wednesday, April 4
- Join in the conversation on the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., from 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 324 of the McNichols Campus Library. This event is sponsored by the African American Studies Department and the Black Abolitionist Archive.
Thursday, April 5
- Students are encouraged to attend the lunch and learn event, "Can You Hear Me; Do you See Me: Bridging Communication Divides," from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Union Presidents' Dining Room. This interactive lecture and discussion centers on the significance of the #MeToo movement in university life.
- The Department of Religious Studies presents the 11th annual Cushing Distinguished Lecture in Religious Studies, featuring Miguel de la Torre, Professor of Social Ethics and Latinx Studies at Iliff School of Theology. This year's lecture, titled, "Embracing Hopelessness," will be held in the Student Union Grounds Coffeehaus. There will be a reception at 6:30 p.m., the lecture begins promptly at 7 p.m.
- CLASA presents the annual UCA Jesuit Martyrs Scholarship fundraiser dinner from 6:45 to 9 p.m. in the Student Union Fountain Lounge. This year's keynote speaker will be Francisco Mena Ugarte, director of CRISPAZ (Christians for Peace in El Salvador). Ugarte will share stories from his own life and explain how the UCA Jesuit martyrs and Dean Brackley, S.J., inspired him. Students can attend for free; the Detroit Mercy community is asked to donate at least $10 to attend. Proceeds raised from the dinner go to Salvadoran families sending students to the University of Central America. Friday, April 6
- Students: There will be a small group session open to anyone interested in learning more about the benefits of using a TitanCareerLink account. The session will be from 1 to 1:45 p.m. in Room 103 of Reno Hall. There will also be a small resume-building workshop available at the same time.
- University of Detroit Mercy will welcome Professor Tiya Miles to campus to discuss and sign her latest book, The Dawn of Detroit: A Chronicle of Slavery and Freedom in the City of the Straights. This special engagement takes place at 5:30 p.m. in the Chemistry Building Room 114. See the news release for more information.
- International Services and the Office of Student Life are hosting a celebration of cultures at Detroit Mercy with food, performances and cultural conversations from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
Saturday, April 7
- University of Detroit Mercy will host the #HeeltheDivide walk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the McNichols Campus; check-in begins at 9:15 a.m. in the Fountain Lounge. This walk focuses on women's rights, equality between sexes, alliances in the community and support services for Detroit residents. Contact the event coordinators at dpac@udmercy.edu to register.

- The Institute for Leadership and Service, Dean of Students Office, International Services Office, University Ministry, Residence Life and Student Life will host the annual Leadership & Service Reception from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. Each department and organization will recognize and acknowledges the accomplishments of its students.
- Please join the Honors Program and the Black Student Union for the annual Honors Symposium from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 113 of the Ford Life Sciences Building. This year's event is centered on race, science and technology, featuring Associate Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry Prasad Venugopal as the keynote speaker.
Thursday, April 12
- The Center for Career & Professional Development has organized a panel discussion introducing Detroit Mercy students, particularly young women, to professional careers in higher education. This discussion will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Presidents' Dining Room. Four panelists will share the diverse pathways they took toward careers in academe. - Students, faculty, staff and administrators: The Charity Fashion Show is back! Enjoy a celebration of free expression through art, live music and dancing from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. Proceeds raised from donations during the fashion show will be given to a group of charities selected by the show's student models.
Friday, April 13
- Kappa Delta Rho fraternity would like your help in supporting the family of deceased Detroit Police Officer Glenn Doss, Jr., by buying some homemade, wood-fired pizza between 3 and 6 p.m. in the Fountain area of the McNichols Campus. All proceeds of this fundraiser will be donated to the Doss family GoFundMe campaign. $3 for a quarter of a pizza, $10 for a whole pizza.
- The College of Liberal Arts & Education Colloquium Series presents a platonic reflection on the presidency of Donald Trump, led by Professor of Philosophy David Koukal, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Front Parlor of Lansing-Reilly Hall. Collegiality, conversations and light refreshments will be served.
- The Ultimate Talent Show is the annual showcase for student talent, including music, poetry, dance and more. This year, the event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Fountain Lounge with a grand prize of $500! Registration and attendance of one practice event is required to participate in the show. - The Center for Social Entrepreneurship in the College of Business Administration will host a conference for nonprofit organizations to come and learn about techniques to achieve sustainability from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. See the event page to register.
- University of Detroit Mercy will host a mathematics competition for interested high school students in a friendly match that tests problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge. The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the Engineering Building and will consist of the competition's exam, meet the professor mingle, prize announcements and lunch (provided). - Detroit Mercy Campus Kitchen is hosting a karaoke fundraiser at Bert's Market Place in Detroit's Eastern Market from noon to 4 p.m. A portion of food sales will be donated to Campus Kitchen. Karaoke participation is optional, but be sure to mention "Campus Kitchen" when you get your bill to ensure a donation!
Opening weekend: The Complete History of America (Abridged)
The Detroit Mercy Theatre Company presents its closing production of the season, The Complete History of America (Abridged), April 6-22. Performances will be at The Marlene Boll Theatre at the Boll Family YMCA, 1401 Broadway, in downtown Detroit. The Complete History of America (Abridged) is a 90-minute romp of slapstick humor and breathlessly paced vaudevillian takes of our country's history.
The Complete History of America (Abridged) will have performances at 7:30 p.m. on April 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, and 3 p.m. on April 8, 15 and 22. College of Engineering & Science partners with Louis Stokes Midwest Center of Excellence
Detroit Mercy's College of Engineering and Science and the Louis Stokes Midwest Center of Excellence (LSMCE) recently signed a collaborative agreement to increase the number of under-represented minority students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Together, along with other universities, the institutions will collaborate to increase student success and retention of under-represented groups in STEM to help address the nation's critical need for scientists and engineers. Read the full story online.
Nominations due for Mission Leadership Awards
On behalf of the Mission Effectiveness Team, nominations are now open for the two annual Mission Leadership Awards: the Vivere ex Missione ("to live the mission") and the Agere ex Missione ("to do the mission").
The Vivere ex Missione Award is an annual award presented to up to four graduating students who best exemplify the mission of University of Detroit Mercy. One qualified student will be selected from each of the following categories and the award will be presented at their respective commencement ceremony: McNichols undergraduate programs, McNichols graduate programs, the School of Law and the School of Dentistry.
The Agere ex Missione Award is presented annually to two individuals: A faculty member and either a staff member or administrator who exemplify the mission of University of Detroit Mercy. This award is presented at the President's Convocation, on Thursday, Aug. 16.
Specific criteria for the awards and additional information can be found online under the accordion "Mission Leadership Awards." Nomination letters should be submitted to Sr. Judy Mouch, RSM, co-chair of the Mission Effectiveness Team, at mouchj1@udmercy.edu by midnight on Friday, April 6.
