Detroit Mercy welcomes new AVP for Human Resources & Payroll

Associate Vice President for Human Resources & Payroll April Lynch.Detroit Mercy has selected April Lynch as the institution’s new associate vice president for Human Resources & Payroll. She will begin at Detroit Mercy on March 11, 2019.

Lynch has served as the first female city manager of Ferndale, Mich., since 2011. During her tenure, she helped to accomplish several initiatives: the organization’s first-ever strategic plan; an ongoing series of improvements throughout the city’s parks system; redevelopment and reinvestment in Ferndale’s downtown and commercial districts; creation of an Early College Program to inspire minority youth to pursue careers in law enforcement; and development of an innovative new hiring and internal learning process.

She also successfully negotiated and managed four union contracts as well as non-union activities simultaneously. In addition, she initiated savings of $200,000 annually through reorganization of City Hall, which included reducing the number of departments from five to three. She also brings more than 20 years of leadership experience to her new role at Detroit Mercy.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the City of Ferndale and it goes without saying that the decision to leave wasn’t an easy one,” she said. “But the offer to work with a talented group of higher education professionals, and to serve as a leader within an organization whose values so closely mirror my own, was an opportunity that I simply couldn’t pass up.”

Previously, she served as the assistant city manager/director of Human Resources for the City of Ypsilanti, director of Human Resources for the City of Monroe and assistant to the city manager/director of Human Resources for the City of Grand Haven. She holds a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in English from Grand Valley State University and a Master’s Degree of Business Administration in Human Resources from Baker College.
