University Ministry

Inspired by God's unconditional love, University Ministry accompanies the Detroit Mercy community as we learn to know, love, and serve God and one another. University Ministry assists the campus community in living out the Detroit Mercy mission, especially as it seeks to integrate the spiritual, ethical, and social development of students with their intellectual learning.

While the University Ministry office has its roots in the Catholic faith, its mission is to support students of all faith traditions in their spiritual development. We encourage dialog between cultures and religions, seeking respectful harmony and cooperation between persons of all backgrounds and traditions. The Ministry team accompanies students throughout their college careers, from their first-year retreat and orientation to Baccalaureate ceremony.

Ministry facilitates:

  • liturgies, including University-wide religious celebrations such as Celebrate Spirit
  • prayer vigils and services
  • interfaith events
  • overnight and on-campus retreats
  • Christian Life Community (CLC) groups
  • speaker series
  • pastoral counseling
  • advocacy based in Catholic social tradition
  • weekly service in the community
  • domestic and international service immersion trips during Winter, Spring, and May Breaks
  • residence hall programs
  • the use of chapels and multi-faith reflection spaces on each campus

In the spirit of the Mercy and Jesuit religious founders and sponsors, University Ministry programs promote a faith that does justice in compassionate service of people who are marginalized and excluded.
