Special Education - Emotionally Impaired/Behaviorally Disordered (MA)

program requirements as defined by each student's plan of work.

The Master of Arts with a major in Special Education - Emotionally Impaired / Behaviorally Disordered program is designed to meet the needs of teachers who wish to prepare themselves for working with individuals experiencing mild to severe emotional and behavioral problems at the elementary, middle, and secondary levels. Additionally, it prepares teachers to meet the needs of exceptional students in the inclusive setting. This program is for individuals who have a teaching certificate and wish preparation for a Special Education EI/BD endorsement. It also presents a means for supervisors and administrators to develop leadership skills in the areas of special education-emotionally impaired/behaviorally disordered.

    Admission Requirements

    The requirements for admission to graduate study in special education are a 3.0 grade point average and fulfillment of requirements for a state teaching certificate, or a background of education and experience satisfactory to the department. Applicants for programs in special education will be required to give evidence of their ability to pursue a professional career in the area chosen for study by submitting three letters of recommendation.

    • EDU 6310 School and Classroom Management (3 credits)
    • SED 5120 Transitions: Special Education in Middle and Secondary Schools (3 credits)
    • SED 5630 Identification and Assessment in Special Education (3 credits)
    • SED 5810 Emotionally Impaired/Behaviorally Disordered (3 credits)
    • SED 5820 Educating the Severely Emotionally Impaired/Behaviorally Disordered/ Autistic Student (3 credits)
    • SED 5830 Educating the Emotionally Impaired (3 credits)
    • SED 5850 Research and Response to Intervention (3 credits)
    • SED 5860 Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Exceptional Students (3 credits)
    • SED 5870* Research Seminar (3 credits)
    • SED 6601 Clinical Experience in Special Education: Emotionally Impaired/Behaviorally Disordered (6 credits)

    Total: 39 credits

    *A master's research paper is completed in SED 5870.

    Second Special Education Endorsement: Learning Disabilities

    An endorsement in learning disabilities may be obtained if a teacher possesses a teaching certificate in special education. Completion of the following approved program for the respective area of endorsement desired is required. The following 22 credit hours of either respective program must be completed to receive this endorsement.
